First International Etchells En Route To Fremantle For Etchells Worlds Workout!

Mark Thornburrow's "Racer C" from Hong Kong is due to arrive in Fremantle in mid-September in the lead up to the Etchells Worlds Workout commencing in late October this year on the Worlds 2020 race track. The Etchells Worlds Workout includes two full weekends of racing and three afternoons of windward/leeward racing on the Etchells Worlds 2020 race track located a short 5-minute sail from Royal Perth Yacht Club Annexe and Fremantle Sailing Club where hardstanding has been negotiated for Etchells during the series. The "Racer C" 2020 Worlds crew including Thornburrow, Mike Huang, Alex Conway and Olympic Gold medallist Malcolm Page are planning to use this series in their campaign leading up to the 2020 Pre-Worlds and World Championships in Fremantle from 18th to 27th November. Sailing Etchells for a number of years, Thornburrow originally started out in the CSR in 1978 at the age of 17 with his first 505 championship win just one year later in the Hong Kong Championships (image below). Thornburrow's recent Etchells results include 2nd place in the 2018 Etchells Worlds in Brisbane and 7th in the Corpus Christi Worlds sailed earlier this year. He was also the European Champion in 2017 and placed 5th in both the Cowes and San Francisco World Championships in 2016 and 2017, respectively. With two OCSs in his last Fremantle regatta in the 2012/13 Etchells Australian Championships amidst an otherwise stellar performance of bullets and podium finishes, Thornburrow intends to bury the memory deep in the past where it belongs and build valuable time on the Worlds 2020 race track as much as a year ahead of the Fremantle Worlds. With five Australian Etchells in the top eight in the 2019 Corpus Christi Worlds, this would appear to be a solid plan towards securing his name amongst the revered Etchells World Champions.
